Miners Find Way to Beat Oilers

July 19, 2014

Madisonville Miners 3, Owensboro Oilers 2.  (From Owensboro). The Owensboro Oilers lost Saturday night. It was the last regular season home game, and the first game of a closing home and away series with the visiting Madisonville Miners. The final score was Miners 3 to Oilers 2.
Madisonville scored first, with one run in the top of the 2nd inning. Caleb Crabtree led off with a single. Chase Powers was hit by a pitch. A strikeout later Michael Colorado RBI singled to score Crabtree from second base. The Miners stretched out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the top of the 5th inning. Ian Burkhart led off that turn at bat with a single. Colorado was hit by a pitch. A groundout moved both runners up a base. Burkhart scored from third base on a wild pitch, and Colorado moved to occupy third base himself. A groundball by Adam Schuster became an RBI as a fielder’s choice play attempting to cut Colorado down at the plate went errant.
Owensboro rallied for one run in the bottom of the 5th inning. With one out, Austin Bartle was hit by a pitch, then stole second base. A fly out later, Alfredo Bohorques was also hit by a pitch. Christian McHatton singled to load the bases. Tyler Rachel reached on an error that allowed Bartle to score, and re-loaded the bases, but the inning’s rally ended there. The Oilers added one more run to the cause in the bottom of the 6th inning. Harold Diaz led off with a double. He scored on a one-out RBI single from Tyler Adams. Owensboro had its chances, advancing a runner to third base in the 8th inning and to second base in the 9th inning, but Madisonville held off the late home scoring attempts, and took the game by the maintained 3 to 2 final.
Madisonville starter Colton Nussel pitched eight of the nine total innings for the win. Miners reliever Reid Clements held down the 9th inning for a save. Owensboro starter Brandon Jean took the loss.
