Miners lose at Bombers

July 3, 2014

Dubois County Bombers 3, Madisonville Miners 0.  (From Dubois County)  If the 1500 Dubois County Bomber fans who packed Huntingburg’s League Stadium last night had thoughts of seeing some early offensive fireworks to kick off the holiday weekend, Tanner Koch and Lucas Barnett had other plans.
What the fans were treated to was one of the best pitching duels of the 2014 OVL season. Madisonville’s Koch and Dubois County’s Barnett matched complete game efforts, eliminating any threat of early fireworks.
Neither team had a hit through three innings. To that point, Koch had held the Bombers hitless.
Ty Broady became Dubois County’s first base runner, singling to lead off the fourth. After advancing to second on a walk to Nick Gobert, Joe Redburn drove in Broady to give the Bombers a 1-0 advantage.
Dubois County added two more in the sixth. Nick Gobert slammed a double off the left-field wall to bring in Chase Scott. Joe Redburn followed with a sharp grounder to first that brought in Glenn Jones, who eluded Jake Perry’s attempted tag at the plate, increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Bombers were retired in order in each of the six remaining frames. But those two innings would be the Miner’s and Koch’s undoing on this night, because as good as Koch was, Barnett was even more dominant.
Madisonville only managed to send more than three batters to the plate three times. On each of those three occasions, a fourth batter was the most Barnett ever needed to retire the side. Only one Miner advanced as far as second base in the contest. He struck out eight Miners, permitting only two hits and two walks.
Barnett’s record improves to 4-1. He is only the second pitcher in the league to achieve four wins thus far in the season. Koch falls to 1-4.
Dubois County is now within a game of .500 at 12-13. The Bombers have won five of their last six. Madisonville’s record falls to 5-21.
