Miners Lose Game 1 in Henderson 15-3

HENDERSON — Not much went right for the Madisonville Miners in Game One of the First Round of the Ohio Valley League Playoffs, losing to the Henderson Flash on Friday, 15-3.

Miners pitcher Austin Henrich got off to an uncharacteristically bad start on the mound, as the Flash rallied for three runs in the first inning, and then a grand slam by Zack Smith in the second gave them a 7-0 lead.

Henrich managed to rebound and throw three shutout innings before being taken off the mound after five innings, but still finished with seven runs (six earned) and the loss.

Nicholas Hutchison came on in relief in the sixth, but things didn’t get any better after that.

David Robins made a pair of acrobatic plays in right field to keep two potential home run balls in the field of play, and even threw out a runner at home on the first hit, but the second one turned into a two-run double as Hutchison gave up three runs in just two-thirds of an inning and was knocked off the mound.

Spencer Woods came in and allowed both of the runners he inherited from Hutchison to score before the inning ended, then gave up one more on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Christopher Mutter came on in the eighth and gave up two runs.

After being shutout through the first four innings by Henderson starter Marty Coursey, Madisonville got its only runs of the game in the fifth, scoring on an RBI single by David Robins that scored Logan Jarvis and an infield single by Ryan Brooks that scored Bradley Hull. The team got one more in the eighth when Ryan Carver drove in Brooks on a single to left-center.

With the Flash now holding a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, the next game will be played at Elmer Kelley Stadium in Madisonville on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
